Online shopping tips

I've talked to many a friend about the benefits of online food and grocery shopping.  Its something I first delved into when I had babies, just to try and find some extra time in the day and avoid going to the shops with a screaming, constantly hungry newborn and/or toddler.  When the boys became a bit more manageable I went back to visiting the supermarket.  Unlike many kids, mine love going food shopping and it was a "free" activity that would keep them entertained and out of the house for at least an hour.

When I started trying to really stick to a budget I decided to give it a go again.  Mainly because I could spend more time searching out specials and sticking to a list while I shop online.  Plus I can spend more time negotiating with myself about what we really need versus what I really want.  Lets not forget the huge benefit of being able to do it at 11pm at night!

Anyway, I have come up with some theories (from personal observation) and tips I thought I might share:
  • Write a list before you start, make sure you are not hungry and check your existing supplies to avoid over ordering
  • Never shop too far in advance, I find if I put my order in more than 2 days prior to delivery I have a much greater chance of an increase in out of stock items in my order
  • Always always check the unit/per 100g price and use this to scrounge out the best deal, remember if you just look at the specials "aisle" you may not realise there are full price items that work out cheaper
  • Decide which provider to use based on their highest discounted specials: meat, cereals, toilet paper and cheese are some of the things that will make the decision for me about who to shop with that week
  • Always choose the cheapest delivery window option or you undo all your hard work by paying a delivery premium
  • Avoid substituing, this can cost you more and you end up with things you didn't want
  • Make sure you register your reward cards with the online chain you choose
  • When the delivery arrives, check EVERYTHING, this means used by/best before dates; most suppliers will have a policy on this (eg you need at least 5 days before the item expires) - if you are not happy with the item, if its damaged, if its not what you ordered then ring up their customer service as you might be entitled to a credit or exchange
I don't usually order fresh fruit from a supermarket chain, I always end up disappointed.  Try and find a direct from market option like http://www.livingontheveg.com.au/ instead.
