This year we are building a house; that means paying rent and making payments on a mortgage. Up until now, I have never really thought about how much money we spend on food and groceries. I thought I always shopped wisely, compared prices and generally planned ahead. But when I stopped and really looked at what we were doing I could not believe how much money we were wasting. So here are the rules:
1. $350 a fortnight for all food, grocery expenses, this means lunches and coffees too! 2. I will not sacrifice healthy eating and no one will go hungry (except don't ask my husband his opinion on that one!)
You might think its easy, but there are a few complications. I work 4 days a week, I don't have time to drive around and pick up bargains or grow my own vegetables. The 3 boys in this house are extremely fussy eaters, I spend loads of time disguising vegetables in my cooking. We need to buy special milk for a couple of us, this costs more and we go through about 8-10 litres of milk in a fortnight. But the biggest budget buster is BANANAS! I usually go through about a dozen in a week.
